Dissent from B.C. First Nation over controversial pipeline project

VANCOUVER – Dissent is being expressed from within a B.C. First Nation over a controversial pipeline project.
A group representing some members of the Gitxsan (Git san) band has issued a news release denouncing a deal that hereditary chiefs announced with Enbridge. The chiefs indicated on Friday they’d accepted Enbridge’s offer of an equity stake in the massive Northern Gateway pipeline.
But the news release says members of the Gitxsan nation weren’t consulted about the Northern Gateway agreement. They’re arguing it’s wrong to sign a deal before the environmental impact assessment process is finished. The Northern Gateway pipeline would bring diluted bitumen from Alberta’s oil sands to the B-C coast. It’s been the source of considerable controversy among First Nations communities and environmental groups. Gitxsan is the first First Nation group to accept Enbridge’s offer of equity stake agreements.
