Crime bill to pass tonight

The Conservatives’ sweeping crime bill is set to pass in the House of Commons tonight.

While the opposition say the bill is moving forward without proper study, Justice Minister Rob Nicholson says its provisions have been reviewed by dozens of witnesses and some elements have been studied for years.

“The time for talk is over.  The time for action is now.  Canadians have given us a strong mandate to build a strong, safer Canada,” he said.  “This legislation does precisely that, by making our streets and communities safer and by standing up for victims in this country.”

The Safe Streets and Communities Act toughens penalties for both youth and adult offenders.  Once it passes in the Commons, it must still be reviewed by the Senate.
