The pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Rideau River connecting Somerset St. E and Donald St., was approved by the city’s transportation committee Wednesday.
Sandy Hill and Overbrook will now be linked by a 112-metre permanent bridge replacing the wooden bridge which is erected during summer months.
The preliminary cost of the new four metre metal trussed bridge which also includes a concrete floor is $7-million dollars. A multi function path will continue at the end of the bridge along the south side of Donald Street to North River Road.
The new bridge is creating some negative buzz among come city councillors including Orleans Coun. Bob Monette who said the Cummings Bridge and Hurdman Bridge is close by.
On the other hand, Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury said the new bridge is a great way to unify neighbourhoods.
The committee has been asked approve the the environmental assessment next Wednesday. No word on when construction will begin.
