Condo highrises get green light

OTTAWA – City council has approved two contentious highrise condo projects.

A 16-story tower will be built on Roosevelt Avenue despite residents saying it would be out of character for the Westboro neighbourhood.

On Catherine Street, a 23-story tower will be built.  Somerset Ward councillor Diane Holmes the only one to vote against that project.

Mayor Jim Watson says the deals aren’t perfect and people don’t always want to see larger buildings in their neighbourhoods, but sometimes it is necessary.

“We have two choices when it comes to these kinds of issues.  We can continue with urban sprawl or we can have intensification,” he said.
