OTTAWA-Ottawa prostitutes are calling for a halt on hooker sweeps.
A spokeswomen for prostitutes in Ottawa-Gatineau says aggressive policing and fear of arrest is forcing hookers into dangerous situtations.
Chris Burkert told the Ottawa Sun, prostitutes are working solo, in alley ways and in plain clothes to avoid being picked up by police and that could be making them vulnerable.
The comments come in the wake of a police warning about a seriel killer who’s believed to be responsible for six hookers murders over the past 21 years.
However, police say street sweeps are a result of community complaints and are not likely to end anytime soon.
Saturday is the 9th Annual International Day to end Violence Against Sex Workers.
In Ottawa, people will gather on Parliament Hill from 2 to 3 this afternoon.
