December’s unusual warm temperatures don’t only indicate we might not have a white Christmas, but it could also mean that people who have made a tradition out of taking a holiday skate on the Rideau Canal might not get to do so this season.
The NCC ice safety committee is still not confirming an opening date, but it will not be before an ice thickness of 25-30 cm is achieved. Skaters itching to get on the 7.8- km skateway this Christmas will just have to be patient, as it is still unclear whether the canal willl be frozen enough to kick off its 42 season.
The rink opened on Jan. 8 last year, and on Jan. 14 in 2010. The latest opening in the history of the canal was on Feb. 2, 2002.
People told 1310News that although this is disappointing news, they are still hopeful that winter won’t let them down.
