Ottawa thaws after Wednesday’s ice storm

OTTAWA – A freezing rainstorm wreaked major havoc on city roads Wednesday, which caused many collisions, cancelled OC Transpo bus trips and delayed or cancelled flights at the airport.

Ottawa Police said they responded to more than 70 collisions on Ottawa roads in a six-hour period. Firefighters were also called to assist police and paramedics.

Two-dozen calls were made to Ottawa Paramedics from people who slipped and fell in the icy conditions.

Paramedics said the number of calls they received for collisions were above normal, but as a result, no injuries were serious.

At the Ottawa Airport, 30 flights were either cancelled or delayed and OC Transpo also had over a dozen single trip cancellations.

Of the 70-plus collisions in the city, the one on Greenbank Road between Hunt Club Road and Fallowfield Road was the worst.  There were only minor injuries, but with Greenbank Road being a main artery into Barrhaven, it caused major delays for drivers especially when it was closed for two hours in the afternoon.
