Experts say all too often, people abandon their New Year’s fitness resolutions before the last of the holiday shortbreads are eaten.
University of Toronto psychiatry professor Janet Polivy says chronic resolution-makers tend to remember their successes — no matter how brief.
But she says if people are going to change, they have to face the fact that it has to be a permanent lifestyle change.
Craig Saikaly of GoodLife Fitness says people are very motivated in January, but when those body changes don’t come fast enough, fitness newcomers tend to fall off the workout wagon.
Experts say a major part of success is setting realistic goals and accepting that nothing happens overnight.
