Attack on Gatineau mosque could be a hate crime

GATINEAU, Quebec – A Muslim organization said an attack on a mosque in Gatineau, Quebec should be treated as a hate crime.
Someone smashed windows at the Outaouais Islamic Centre early Monday and tried to torch two cars in the parking lot.
The Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations said it’s not the first time the mosque has been the target of vandals. It said such attacks divide communities by stigmatizing visible minorities.
Similar attacks have been reported south of the border. According to the Globe and Mail, in Queens New York police are investigating a series of arson attacks which occurred on Sunday in which one of the targets was an Islamic centre.
Investigators are looking into the incident in New York to decide if it was a hate crime.
