UBC student found dead in Mexico

HUATULCO, Mexico – Another death in Mexico involving someone with links to BC. A PhD student from UBC has been found dead on a Mexican beach.
Ximena Osegueda went missing in early December while visiting Huatulco. Police then discovered her body, and that of her partner, half buried on a beach.
State Attorney General Manuel de Jesus Lopez says both had been stabbed in the neck and that their bodies were set on fire. Police are investigating robbery as a possible motive.
UBC’s Lucie McNeill says grief counsellors will be made available to her colleagues..
“You know, in cases like this for UBC, of course part of our concern becomes how our students and our community is affected by this,” notes McNeill.
“In cases like this we make available resources to make sure students have the supports that they need, not only grief counselling but if students are interested in having a memorial for this person or needing to talk about this person, the university is there to support that.”
Osegueda’s facebook page is filled with tributes.
Earlier this week Robin Wood of Salt Spring was also killed in Mexico, during an apparent robbery.
