Downtown Salvation Army Shelter is on strike

OTTAWA – Sixty unionized employees at the Salvation Army’s Booth Street location took to the picket line Friday afternoon.
The employees which consist of cleaners, kitchen staff, and social workers walked off the job, because they claim they get paid $5 less than other shelters across the city.
PSAC has been offered a 7.5 per cent increase over three years in addition to a signing bonus of $500 for full-time employees and $250 for part-time and two additional bereavement days.
Salvation Army spokesperson Michael Maidment tells 1310News they are standing by the offer they made last year and that they feel it is fair.
He adds they will not go back to the table but instead have offered to go to arbitration.
The Salvation Army shelter will remain open to provide services to those in need.
