Fire in Blackburn Hamlet leaves 3 homeless

OTTAWA – A blaze at 2177 Orient Park Dr. in Blackburn Hamlet has forced three people from their home and caused $85,000 in damages.

Ottawa Fire said the fire damage was contained to a second floor bedroom but there was some smoke and water damage elsewhere in the home.

“There was one individual at home at the time and he was in the kitchen when the fire broke out so he got out safely,” said Marc Messier of Ottawa Fire. “A total of three people live here so they’ll be displaced for a little while until they get the repairs made.”

Ann lives in the townhouse complex and told 1310News she watched the fire take over a back window.

“There was what looked like a two- or three-foot wide expanse of flame coming out several feet from the house and just going straight up,” she told 1310News.

“The first thought was ‘I hope everyone’s okay’ and what I realized was from here, being a bystander and a neighbour, I couldn’t tell,” said Ann. “I couldn’t tell if someone needed help, didn’t need help, it’s quite a helpless feeling.”

She said there is a community association that will likely try to help the people living in the unit, though she said she didn’t know them.

Messier explained the inhabitants are a father and his adult son, who only lives there part time, as well as a tenant.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
