OTTAWA, ON. – Winterlude kicked off with a bang on Friday night, with a musical fireworks show outside the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau.
Kathryn Keyes with the NCC says 30,000 people took in the ceremonies.
The museum was lit up with red and blue lights for the opening ceremony, which began at 8:30.
Parks Canada had historical interpreters dressed up in costume, walking around answering questions.
Brett was dressed as a soldier from Fort George in the War of 1812.
“I would have been a very important soldier … and I would have been protecting and defending our borders,” Brett told a group of kids.
This year’s firework show included music.
The fireworks were accompanied by a piece of music by Canadian composer Malcom Forsyth.
When the show began the crowd gasped and cheered.
The sound was deafening as the fireworks launched off the Alexandra Bridge and Nepean Point .
The NCC said it was the best pyrotechnical display in Ottawa, even better than Canaday Day.
And many audience members agreed.
“It was a better year this year,” said France. “The fireworks were better than for the Casino du Lac-Leamy for the competition.”
Other Winterlude-goers like Jennifer said they’re happy everything is free.
“For a family of five we’re on a tight budget. I think we had to pay for parking tonight and that’s it,” said Jennifer. “So this was a free, fun night. It was wonderful. Tax dollars well spent.”
