Overcrowding at Barrhaven school

OTTAWA, On — Students of Longfield’s-Davidson Heights Secondary School are calling for solutions to the overcrowding of their school.

It opened in 2009 and is already over capacity.

Longfield’s-Davidson Heights can accomodate 1,300 students, but is already at 1,400.

Jennifer Mackenzie is the chair of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board and she tells 1310News, “the amount of capital spending in that area is well over $90 million.”

Mackenzie points out that Barrhaven isn’t the only area in need.

“Kanata, Orleans, even the inner city where some of our schools need significant capital investment”.

Nepean Carleton M.P.P. Lisa Macleod has started a petition to push the provincial government to earmark more funds for an expansion at Longfield’s-Davidson Heights.

There are already 10 portables at the school to accommodate growth and that is expected to grow to 24 by September.
