Work begins on Highway 5 extension

Despite the efforts of Occupy Gatineau protesters construction is underway on extending Highway 5 near the village of Wakefield.

Contractors will have to clear-cut 75 acres of Gatineau Park and blast through a nearby mountain in order to complete the job.

Laurence Keyte is one of those against the highway extension.  He tells 1310News one of the reasons for the protest.

“They’re creating a massive Los Angeles-style intersection right outside of Wakefield,” he said.  “That’s part of Wakefield’s frustration. Come on, we could do a simple traffic circle or something but we don’t need this huge spaghetti intersection that blows up even more of a mountain.”

Protesters have told 1310News they plan to chain themselves to trees, or even climb them to try and stop construction.
