WAKEFIELD – Protestors blocked a road under construction and camped out in trees in Gatineau Park on Wednesday near Wakefield.
They tried to stop crews from cutting down trees to facilitate the controversial Highway 5 expansion.
The environmental groups, known as A5X, had anticipated the construction work for several weeks.
Heavy logging equipment rolled into the park on Tuesday to begin the clear cutting for the La Pêche phase of the project.
The construction slated to link Chelsea and La Peche; however, it requires clearing over 88 hectares of mature forest and the blasting of Brown Lake Mountain.
