Tulip Festival on the move

The 60th edition of the Canadian Tulip Festival is on the horizon, but will be in a new location.

Organizers say the cost of holding it on National Capital Commission property is becoming too prohibitive.  The festival is on the hook for a $35 000 performance bond to restore the site to it’s original condition.  Last year, that required an additional $ 9 000 which organizers hadn’t budget for.

Jean Wolff of the N.C.C tells 1310News, ” We haven’t been formally notified, we’re just reacting to comments attributed to officials from the Canadian Tulip Festival.”

David Luxton is the chair of the festival and he wants to see more engagement and involvement from community groups and business improvement areas.

Lori Mellor is the executive director of the Preston Street BIA.  She tells 1310News, “we’re quite delighted to see this change of direction. That’s been one of our criticisms of these festivals in the past”.

Wolff says despite the possible move, the N.C.C. will still be planting one million tulip bulbs at Major’s Hill and Commissioner’s parks as has been the tradition since 1953.

The Canadian Tulip Festival runs from May 4 -21, 2012.
