Workers of the Salvation Army’s Booth Centre have been on strike for two months.
They are asking for wage parity with workers in other downtown shelters.
Larry Rousseau, P-SAC rep for the workers tells 1310News, they’re not backing down. ” It seems to have united them and brought them closer together”.
Employees with the Booth Centre make between $11.31 and $14.46 an hour. Most of them are below the so-called “living wage”.
The workers demonstrated with a march at 12:00p.m. Tuesday, starting at Holland Cross and heading toward 1339 Wellington, the office of prominent Ottawa businessman, Graham Bird. He sits on the Salvation Army’s Advisory Board.
Rousseau tells 1310News they’re following through on their promise. ” We did say we would bring the message to people who have some accountability”.
The dispute has raged on for 60 days and Rousseau characterizes negotiations as ” molasses in March”.
