Wednesday’s temperature breaks record

OTTAWA – Just 24 hours after Ottawa residents were bundled up in parkas and scarves, we are now basking in the glow of a record-breaking high.

As of 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, the temperature was at 11.7 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record of 11.1 degrees Celsius set in 1974. The official confirmation will come from Environment Canada on Thursday.

1310 meteorologist Richard Zurawski said spring is here to stay. “I would say, putting myself on the limb and sawing it off, that the back of winter is broken and the groundhogs had it right.”

The warm weather forced the city to close its 55 sledding hills as well as the Rink of Dreams, as ice on the rink begins to melt at ten degrees.

Residents are also being warned to avoid thin ice on area waterways.

But this Ottawa resident didn’t seem to mind the apparent end of the sledding and skating season.

“This early in the year, this early in the afternoon, because it’s such a beautiful day, why not enjoy a mid-afternoon pint?”
