Booth Centre Salvation Army workers head to arbitration

OTTAWA, On.- After 75 days on the picket line workers at the Salvation Army’s Booth Centre location have decided to enter into arbitration.

The employees, who are cleaners, kitchen staff and social workers have been walking the picket line since January 6th.

PSAC Regional Executive Vice-President Larry Rousseau told 1310News they believe they’ve gotten their point across.

“Going into arbitration after 75 days on the strike line the case has been made,” said Rousseau. “All of the Ottawa community is now aware that the issue is not about the 23 cents that was offered on the table, but is really about how much the Booth Centre workers should be earning compared to the workers at other centres. “

Michael Maidment, Director of Public Relations for the Salvation Army told 1310News that the Booth Street Centre was happy to see their employees back at work.

“Of course there’s a plan following the strike to re-integrate all the workers back,” said Maidment. “We welcomed them this morning and met with them and now we’re off to business as usual and serving our clients.”

Maidment added the Salvation Army is committed to resolving the wage issues.

The 60 employees returned to work Thursday and hope to have a deal in place by the summer.
