OTTAWA, On- Crowds in the ByWard Market got a special treat today, a surprise performance by local blues band MonkeyJunk to help set the stage for the Junos Week activities which kick of next week.
More than 45 people paused to bop and sway along to the band’s hit Tiger in Your Tank and stayed for two other songs.
“It’s wonderful,” said Bill, a long-time MonkeyJunk fan. “I had no idea it was going on and I’m not going anywhere,” he said adding he’d thrown his morning agenda out the window.
MonkeyJunk guitarist Tony D said he was enjoying a chance to play again in the ByWard Market.
“This is like humble beginnings, you know, I’ve had to busk a few times on the streets and here I am again,” he told 1310News.
He said his band is growing in popularity across the country and it’s great to see that resonate with the crowd in his hometown.
The impromptu performance set the stage for the host committee to announce new events coming to Junos week including Musical Corners in the Byward Market – a chance for local musicians to exhibit their talent – and JUNO Pianos – a series where 10 pianos will be placed across town welcoming impromptu performances.
The NCC also announced a Francophone Concert, a Classical Concert and an Honouring Ceremony for Aboriginal Nominees.
Juno week kicks of March 26 in the capital and runs until the awards gala April 1st.
