Strong support for Mulcair in Ottawa-Centre

The federal NDP had their best result in the last federal election becoming the official opposition.

Many people in the NDP stronghold of Ottawa-Centre believe Thomas Mulcair can keep the orange crush going in the right direction.

“Absolutely, I think he can move the party,” said Frank. “I think he’s realistic about what needs to be done as an official opposition and to grow the party within the rest of the country.”

Mulcair takes over from Interim Leader Nycole Turmel when the House of Commons resumes this week and his first big test will come Thursday when the Conservatives present the federal budget.

People believe he’ll fare well against Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae.

“I think he’ll do fine.  He’s a professionsal politician,” said Phil. “He’ll do better than Nycole Turmel anyways.”

The one thing those in Paul Dewar country don’t see is Mulcair filling the void left by Jack Layton.

“No, not at all. I think his mandate’s completely different than Jack Layton’s. It’s a more nationalist mandate than a federalist mandate.” said Abigail. “I think he was voted in strategically to bring Quebec into accord with the NDP vision that he’ll wish to build.”

Mulcair won’t have to run in an election until 2015 because of the Conservative majority win last year.
