Strong earthquake strikes northern Japan

A strong earthquake struck northern Japan, Tuesday. No damage has been reported and no tsunami warning issued.

The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded it as a preliminary 6.4-magnitude, but the U.S. Geological Survey labelled it as a 6.0.

The quake struck about 10 kilometres deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Officals said “there may be slight sea-level changes in coastal regions,” but there is no threat of a tsunami.

People in Tokyo reported feeling light shaking, but there are no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Japan has been dealing with several strong earthquakes since that massive magnitude-9.0 quake hit more than a year ago — making it one of the largest earthquakes in the world since seismological record keeping began.

That earthquake was followed by a massive tsunami. The disaster left thousands of people dead and led to problems at their nuclear facilities.
