Tips for planning a destination wedding

Destination weddings are still a hot trend for many couples, and with spring now arriving the major wedding season is coming into full swing.

If you’re dreaming of saying “I do” on a warm beach, a relationship expert with iVillage has some tips.

One of the major tips involves packing carefully and correctly.

“Ensure that anything that you must have, a.k.a. your wedding dress, comes with you on the plane and don’t check any luggage you can’t live without,” Robin Shanks said.

You should also be mindful of the fact that your guests have spent a lot of money to come overseas.

“If you’re away for a week, your wedding shouldn’t take up more than two or three of those days, people have spent a lot of money to be there, so they should be allowed to sort of do their own thing and not feel pressure to constantly be celebrating you and your wedding,” Shanks added.

As for anything going wrong, Shanks says to take things in stride.

“A lot of women tend to be very controlling, especially when it comes to their wedding,” Shanks said. “We can have very, very high expectations – you can’t control the weather, you can’t control the rain and you can’t control how the people around you act all the time.”

She recommends that you also bring lots of sunscreen, as you won’t want a sunburnt look in your wedding photos.

As well, make sure to look at the specific laws of the country you are getting married in.
