RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Richmond’s mayor says his city is very far from signing a new contract with the RCMP, in light of information that has just surfaced.
It seems Ottawa is offering Mounties a raise, just weeks after BC and six other provinces agreed to ink a new 20-year policing deal.
Mayor Malcolm Brodie says he’s lost faith in the deal his city is expected to sign. “When you’re being asked to sign and one of the parties all of a sudden is saddling you with more costs, it certainly doesn’t make you feel very confident about the agreement.”
Brodie is looking forward to a meeting of mayors and detachments later this month because he says many more issues are outstanding.
“We have a lot of concerns. We want to know about accountability, about the costs and how they’re contained, about integrated teams and the approach to them and the costs.”
He says the pay raises will add a considerable amount to the cost of having the RCMP in his city.
Maple Ridge and Surrey have already agreed to the 20-year deal reached between BC and Ottawa last month.
