Hélène Campbell responsive after double-lung transplant surgery

TORONTO, On. — Just days after her double-lung transplant surgery, Hélène Campbell is becoming more responsive and is doing leg exercises in bed.

The Barrhaven woman was in a medically-induced coma after her seven hour surgery on Friday and doctors predicted she wouldn’t wake up for three to four days.

But according to the 20-year-old’s Twitter feed, she is now communicating using an alphabetic board.

Sunday afternoon @alungstory tweeted “Hélène continues to remain stable, she is able to do some breathing on her own but is still helped with the ventilator.”

Surgeon Tom Waddell called the surgery a success but warned it could be two weeks until he knows if her body has accepted the lungs.

Hélène is the force behind A Lung Story, an online campaign which raises awareness about organ donation.

The double-lung transplant recipient has boosted the organ donation registry, with the help of stars like Ellen DeGeneres and Justin Bieber.
