OTTAWA, On.- Rockcliffe Park Public School says approximately $70-thousand is missing from its school council bank account.
An audit and police investigation are underway, but there is enough information gathered to provide a preliminary report.
The report was released at a regularly scheduled school council meeting Tuesday night.
School council executives sent a letter out to parents informing them of the missing cash.
In the letter they said, “…we have discovered financial irregularities in the School Council bank account.”
Several programs, from the homework club to milk and pizza programs which usually go to fund the grade six trip, will be impacted, but the council says they are taking steps to ensure these programs continue.
Berndt Zeitler’s daughter goes to the school and he says he only found out about the missing funds through the media.
“I saw the amount and I was shocked at that and then unfortunately I didn’t have time to read anymore,” he said, adding he still has many questions.
And even though this is a major concern for him he said me it won’t stop him funding school programs.
“No, I mean, things like that can happen and now they’ll probably be a little more safe about it,” he said.
Elaine said she won’t stop funding either, saying she believes only one person is responsible. Still, she has two children attending the school and said she is very concerned.
“Yes, if there’s an accounting irregularity, I mean, clearly, well, I thought embezzlement right away and I don’t want to jump to conclusions but that’s what it looks like,” she said.
“Absolutely,” was Karolee’s response when asked if she was concerned. “I’d like to hear more today, I’ll probably ask some of the other parents.”
And while her own children won’t be affected if the after school program is cut she said many parents will be stuck finding a solution quickly and she knows how difficult that can be.
