Tulips begin to bloom in capital

It is a sure sign that spring has hit the capital.

The National Capital Commission says almost one million tulip bulbs, in 100 varieties are starting to bloom in 40 sites across the city, just in time for the 60th Tulip Festival.

Commissioners Park, near Dow’s Lake, is the spot with the most flowers.  The zebra print tulip is one kind among the 300,000 tulips in the park.

The tradition of tulips in Ottawa began in 1945 when the Netherlands sent 100,000 bulbs to Canada, as a post-war gift for providing a safe harbour to the Dutch Royal Family.
