OHL suspends Ottawa 67’s captain Marc Zanetti indefinitely

TORONTO – The Ontario Hockey League suspended Ottawa 67’s defenceman Marc Zanetti indefinitely on Saturday for an alleged kicking incident a night earlier in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final with the Niagara IceDogs.

The Ottawa captain allegedly kicked Niagara’s Tom Kuhnhackl after the winger scored to give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead in the third period.

No penalty was called on the play and Niagara went onto win the game 2-1 in overtime.

A ruling on the length of Zanetti’s suspension is expected in the near future after the league conducted a telephone hearing with the player, as well as 67’s general manager and head coach Chris Byrne.

Game 2 of the series goes Sunday in St. Catharines, Ont.

Zanetti has already been suspended once this post-season. He received a five-game ban for a spearing incident in warmups prior to Game 2 of Ottawa’s Eastern Conference quarter-final series against the Belleville Bulls.
