Alfie’s future still unknown as Sens wrap up season

Senators coach Paul MacLean and GM Bryan Murray tried to answer some lingering post-playoff questions on Saturday, at a news conference at Scotiabank Place.

As the Sens hung up their jerseys for the season, MacLean said he feels they have laid a solid foundation for September.

Maclean said he’s pleased with the impressive growth of the team.

He said the team came together and worked hard.

He said he felt the players created opportunities but just didn’t finish them.

“You have to be able to score your way to the Stanley Cup, not defend your way there,” said MacLean. “And we didn’t score enough goals.”

Unsurprisingly both MacLean and Murray were bombarded by questions about Alfie.

Murray said Alfie is taking a step back and said he hasn’t given him a timetable to make a decision.

“He’s going to make the call. I’m going to try to call him everyday and bug him to stay,” said Murray. “But he will make that decision.”

Alfie said he needs to have the desire to play another season and will need some time to mull it over.

MacLean said it’s important people give Alfie some space to make his decision.

“He can play as long as he wants to play and whenever he decides that he’s had enough, I’ll be one of the first guys to stand up and clap,” said MacLean. “But that’s a decision that he has to make on his own over time and we’re going to give him the time that he needs.”

MacLean said he’s excited to be behind the bench next season, but “scared to death” of all the expectations.
