New electricity rates take effect Tuesday

Ontario residents will start paying more for electricity as of Tuesday.

The increases announced by the Ontario Energy Board in April mean an average increase of between $4-6 for the average bill.

The increases are blamed on the cost of modernizing the energy system to make it more environmentally-friendly.

Coal fired plants are being phased out and replaced by natural gas, solar power and wind.

The fee increases are as follows:

  • Peak energy prices (11 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays) will increase 0.9 cents to 11.7 cents per kilowatt an hour (kWh)
  • Mid-peak prices, (7-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. weekdays), will increase 0.8 cents to 10 cents per kWh
  • Off-peak prices (7 p.m. to 7 a.m. weekdays and all day on weekends and holidays) will increase 0.3 cents to 6.5 cents per kWh
