Ontario hydro rates rise

Ontario consumers are looking at an increase in the annual residential hydro rate from $4 to $6 a month.     The increase was announced in April.      Ontario’s Energy Board claims the increase is due to the province moving away from coal powered power plants with more natural gas, nuclear and renewables picking up the slack.

Nepean Carleton M.P.P. Lisa Macleod tells 1310News it’s all due to Ontario’s Green Energy plan.   “It’s becoming catastrophic for small business owners trying to keep up with these increases”.

Peter Tilley at the Ottawa Food Bank tells 1310News, the increase hits the most vulnurable.   ” The people were feeding are barely paying their rent, they’re barely making ends meet.  It’s bad enough food prices have escalated”.

The average home uses 800 kilowatt hours of power a month and this will mean a six dollar increase for them, while those with a smart metre will see a jump of 4 dollars a month.
