Fire forces family from south end home

OTTAWA – A family of five will have to stay with family after a fire in Arnott Park.

Crews received a frantic call at 3:36 a.m. Monday, reporting a fire at 711 Hartman Cres., near Walkley and Riverside.

Heavy flames were racing up the outside of the home.  The fire began on the side of the house, around the hydro meter.

A man who lives in the house says he was home when the fire began, and the fire cut the power to the home.  He says he frantically searched for the family’s black dog, in the dark.

The family dog and a pet gecko were rescued and are okay.  No one else was hurt.

Damage is pegged at $300,000.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Investigators said the fire is not suspicious.
