Hunger is in every city in Canada. During this Hunger Awareness week, we are learning 55 per cent of food banks across the country are struggling to provide for clients and have had to cut back. Here in Ottawa, the situation isn’t as dire according to Peter Tilley of the Ottawa Food Bank. ” Ours was down only six percent, this is a great community”. But he does say demand was up eight per cent in February.
Almost four in ten children and teens rely on a food bank for their nourishment. “Most people who use food banks, don’t use natural gas, they live in apartments and pay hydro bills and maybe not having to heat their homes if we get this Canadian summer going, we’ll see people’s burdens lifted”.
Food banks began in Canada as a temporary measure. Edmonton opened the first in 1981, followed by Toronto in 1983 and then May 16, 1984, the Ottawa Food Bank was founded.
Catelli pasta is pitching in for the cause. This week, it will donate a serving of pasta to Ontario food banks for every package purchased.
