Fire crews battle east end blaze

OTTAWA – At least six families have been displaced by a fire in a complex of row homes in the east end.

There is no estimate of damage or the cause but everyone, including a dog and cat rescued by firefighters were able to get out safely.

Marc Messier of Ottawa Fire says a man came directly in to the Montreal Rd. fire station to report the blaze.

“When we first got the call it was a passer-by who came to the station. He announced there was a fire on Hochelaga St. which is actually behind these units,” said Messier. “The trucks responded there and when they realized it wasn’t there they came back this way. There was a slight delay as a result of the directions of the person reporting the fire.”

The stubborn blaze was under control just before 2 p.m. after residents watched crews battle the blaze from behind red fire tape.

Christine lives two doors down and told 1310News she didn’t even know the fire was happening until the fire crews arrived.

“The fire department was here before we had any knowledge of the fire at all,” Christine said. “I didn’t smell it. I didn’t notice it. All of a sudden we saw the lights and my husband went out to see why there was lights and noticed that the house two doors down was smoking. It was literally three seconds before there was smoke in our house.”

Ottawa fire didn’t have an exact number of people, but say at least six units were effected by the blaze.

They called in the Red Cross and Salvation army to help place the families who need a place to stay.
