Civil service cuts may run deeper than first thought

OTTAWA – Job cuts to the federal civil service will be much deeper than originally forecast, according to a new report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.

The Centre predicts the federal government will have cut nearly 30,000 jobs by 2015; that’s 10,000 more than was announced in the budget.

The federal government’s budget calls for the elimination of 19,200 positions.

The extra losses come from announced job cuts to departments before the budget. So far, the federal government has sent out 18,000 notices to employees that they could be affected.

About a thousand are expected to go out today at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Despite the cuts,  the numbers show the federal government will come up short of it’s $11-billion dollar target of savings by 2015.
