U.S. Airways jet diverted for security issue

A U.S. Airways jet flying from Paris to Charlotte, N.C., was been diverted to Bangor, Maine because of what airline officials labelled as a security issue.

A person briefed on the incident said a female passenger from Cameroon handed a note to the flight crew announcing she had a device surgically planted inside her body, but gave no indication the device was a bomb or any other type of threat.

Officials have since determined there is no evidence of a bomb involved.

A North American Aerospace Defence Command spokesman said two F-15 fighter jets scrambled to escort the plane.

There were 179 passengers on board.
