VANCOUVER – A young man who pleaded guilty to participating in the Stanley Cup riot has been given jail time.
Emmanuel Alviar was led away in handcuffs after being handed one month in jail and 16 months probation after he pleaded guilty.
In handing down his sentence, Justice Rich Harris says general deterrence is needed in a case like this, especially after Vancouver has suffered two riots after Stanley Cup loses and and Alviar is that example.
The 19-year-old admitted to taking part in the riot last June, saying he “lost his dignity.”
The Crown was asking for four months in jail, while Alviar’s lawyer was hoping for a conditional sentence, noting he had no prior criminal record.
“Basically that would give him the chance to make recompense in the community, whereas in jail, [that’s] not going to happen,” explains Gary Botting. “Too often we put people in jail, because that’s the first the response. In this case, I think it’s appropriate. But in most cases, a long jail sentence like four months is not appropriate.”
Vancouver Police arrested hundreds of people on June 15th, and tracked down more through video ID, public appeals and their website.
Police recommended close to 600 charges against 200 or so suspected rioters. So far the Crown has approved 276 charges against 104 people.
