From comedy to drama to clowns to rapping Shakespeare lyrics, Ottawa’s Fringe Festival gets its 16th year underway this Thursday with a little something for everyone.
The downtown core plays host to 10 days of eclectic performances from smaller artists pushing the boundaries of traditional theatre. The playbill for the 2012 festival includes more than 300 shows from 52 performers, running the gambit from bold and brilliant to experimental productions that may fall flat.
But executive producer of the festival, Natalie Joy Quesnel says that’s the beauty of the Fringe.
“It’s an easy, comfortable environment to initiate yourself to theatre. But it’s also a fantastically challenging environment for people who are used to theatre, and want to be stimulated and try something new and a bit more daring,” Quesnel tells 1310News. “It really does have this sense of community and festival that suits a wide range of people.”
Show lengths average an hour to an hour and a half, and tickets are $10 at the door or $13 online. Quesnel adds it’s a chance to experience some eclectic performances from smaller artists without spending a lot of time or money.
“And at the end of the day, if it wasn’t the greatest thing, you missed out less than the cost of a movie.
The festival runs from June 14 to the 24.
