CFB Petawawa fires approaches Algonquin Park

PETAWAWA, Ont – A massive forest fire on the CFB Petawawa base has closed all access to the east side of Algonquin Park and all crown land on the Barron Canyon Road in Pembroke.
The fire is about 300 meters from the border of the park at its closest point.
Campers in the area have been evacuated.
Algonquin Park Forester Joe Yaraskavitch told 1310News crews are making good headway controlling the flames and they are confident they have a good handle on the fire.
The blaze began Thursday at around 1:45 p.m. near the firing range and quickly burned out of control because of the dry conditions.
Two water tankers and a helicopter have been brought in to help base and ministry fire crews battle the flames.
