OTTAWA, On. — Governor General David Johnston was on hand Sunday morning to unveil Canada’s newest national monument to commemorate the honour and sacrifice of every Canadian firefighter who died in the line of duty.
The monument is located at LeBreton Flats and features the names of firefighters who lost their lives dating back to 1848.
Three surviving family members joined the governor general to look over the commemorative wall bearing the 1,111 names of the fallen firefighters.
Members of the public also attended the unveiling of the new monument.
