OTTAWA, Ont. – Labour talks are back on for teachers in the capital region.
The Ottawa Carleton District School Board held an emergency meeting Tuesday night to update trustees. The board said it is once again bargaining with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation.
Although no deal has been reached, Board Chair Jennifer McKenzie says it’s a positive thing that talks have resumed, and that future talks are planned.
The emergency meeting came as Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced the province has approved two agreements between high school teachers and their local school boards. Five school boards managed to reach tentative agreements with the province and two of those deals, York Region School Board and Upper Grand School Board, got the government’s blessing.
McGuinty said he’s taking it as a sign that more deals can be reached, and that the school year can be saved from further strike actions.
McGuinty, who is demanding a two-year wage freeze, said those agreements could serve as a template for other boards and teachers.
High school teachers are now into their second week of job action; they’ve stopped performing duties outside the classroom including supervision and coaching.
The OCDSB will also hold talks with the Elementary Teacher’s Federation of Ontario in the near future.
