The “Idle No More” movement shows no signs of easing, with more protests and blockages planned for Saturday.
Cornwall Police have closed the Seaway International Bridge as a precaution ahead of the planned protest.
Ontario Provincial Police are warning that traffic disruptions are possible in several areas this weekend, advising drivers to pre-plan and be patient.
The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge into Niagara Falls and the Peace Bridge into Buffalo could both see protest disruptions.
There has been word of a possible protest Saturday on Highway 403 in Hamilton, as well, causing police to issue a general warning that traffic at border crossings and the 400-series highways could be interrupted by protests.
The expected protests are part of the “Idle No More” movement, in support of Attawapiskat First Nation’s Chief Theresa Spence.
She has been on a liquid-only diet in protest of the quality of life for First Nation’s people in comparison to the rest of Canadians.
“The message here is to expect treaty rights,” said one protester. “The message here is a show of solidarity.”
Officials have said her demands include a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who has now agreed to meet with First Nation’s chiefs next week.
