Non-traditional funeral planned for murdered Ottawa teen

OTTAWA, ON- Those attending the funeral of 18 year old murder victim Sheldon O’Grady will not be doing so in traditional black clothing.

Instead, his memory will be celebrated in a sea of white at St. Patrick’s Basilica on Friday morning.

The family of the 18 year old is asking attendees to the service to wear white, to honour what they say would be his wish.

Visitation is at McEvoy Shields Funeral Home on Hunt Club Thursday from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm.

The funeral will be held at St. Patricks at 10:00am Friday.

Meanwhile, the flags were at half mast and some students at Algonquin College wore blue on Monday, in Sheldon’s honour.

O’Grady was stabbed outside a nightclub in Gatineau early Saturday morning.

He was a member of the Algonquin Thunder soccer team, and had planned to try out for the Toronto FC Adademy.

Thunder Head Coach Jimmy Zito tells 1310News Sheldon was a “really kind guy with a big heart who loved the game of soccer.”

Zito says he was called by the team captain Saturday morning who told him “Sheldon had been stabbed in the club, and had bled out in the club.”

“There was an issue with somebody who was in the club, and there was past issues with the same guy.”

Sheldon had attended high school at Hillcrest, St. Patrick’s, and Immaculata.

Gatineau police have arrested and charged Mourad Louati, 18, of Ottawa with second degree murder.

He is scheduled to make a second court appearance February 5.

Police have not recovered the murder weapon and are asking anyone with information to contact them at 819 243-2346 ext 6677.
