OTTAWA, Ont. – The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario says teachers will not stage walkouts Friday.
Ottawa Carleton District School Board schools have cancelled classes, despite the Ontario Labour Board ruling that the planned one-day walkout by the provinces teachers would be illegal. However, OCDSB Director of Education Jennifer Adams, says alternate activities have been set up for students that show up to school. There are no buses running to elementary schools with the OCDSB.
Public elementary schools with the Renfrew County Board are closed Friday.
It’s business as usual at schools with the Upper Canada District School Board. Schools are open and teachers will be in class.
The OLRB ruling came just a few hours before thousands of educators were due to stage the walkout in protest of the governing Liberals’ decision to impose two-year contracts under a controversial anti-strike law.
EFTO president Sam Hammond said the union respects the decision and that teachers would be asked not to stage the one-day protest.
