OTTAWA – The man who pleaded guilty to beating Breezy the dog will pay for the crime, however, previous allegations of cruelty to animals will go unpunished.
The Crown alleges Stephen Helfer, 24, stomped on his pet Chinchilla and her babies and also skinned a family of rats. His mother and sister, who are believed to be witnesses, either have medical reasons not to testify or can’t be found.
He has admitted to animal cruelty, criminal harassment and two counts of assault after the savage attack on Breezy with a shovel.
He faces up to five years in prison and a lifetime ban on owning animals.
He is still going through a psychiatric evaluation and will be back in court on February, 14.
