OTTAWA, Ont. – The standoff between the province and Ontario’s elementary teachers will ramp up again Thursday, as they plan protests against bill 115.
Last week, the Ontario Labour Relations Board ruled that teachers can’t legally stage job action during school hours, so they will be marching and waving their picket signs after class.
“Clearly, we are not going to defy the law,” said Ottawa-Carleton Elementary Teachers’ Federation president Peter Giuliani. “We said all along we are law abiding.”
Angry teachers will fan out across the city with demonstrations planned for 4:30 p.m. in front of Premier Dalton McGuinty’s office at 1795 Kilborn Ave., at the office of Liberal M.P.P. Bob Chiarelli’s constituency office 201-2249 Carling Ave., and at the office of Progressive Conservative M.P.P. and education critic, Lisa Macleod at 3500 Fallowfield Rd.
While teachers are angry with the Liberal government, they are also targeting their ire at the Tories because they backed the Liberals in passing Bill 115. The legislation gives the government the power to impose a collective agreement if it doesn’t like what the union and local boards negotiate.
