Sens Mile to make early return

Ottawa City Council has agreed to bring back the Sens Mile early this season.

“Businesses have been hurting because of the strike, so it was determined that it would be a good idea to put the Sens Mile signs up,” area Councillor Diane Holmes told 1310News. “The hockey team had asked for that and it’s certainly a good idea to start to rev up the interest in the Senators hockey club and to make sure the businesses that rely on the hockey club are back in business.”

The motion was approved at Wednesday’s council meeting to put the commemorative signs up along Elgin Street for the shortened season. In the past the street was just dubbed ‘Sens Mile’ during the playoffs. The tradition began in 2010.

The ‘Sens Army’ has already returned to Elgin since the NHL dropped the puck on the shortened 48-game season.

“Saturday, all day with the multiple number of games, it was fantastic and Monday night it was full,” said Luke Rochefort, owner of St. Louis Bar & Grill.  “Whether the signs are up or not, I think people still remember this as the Sens Mile and I think they will for years to come.”

Holmes did not know when the signs would return to the street.

The announcement comes as the Sens and Scotiabank Place revealed Sunday’s Sens home game versus the Pittsburgh Penguins is sold out.

They also revealed there were less than 2,500 tickets remaining for both Tuesday’s Washington Capitals game and next Wednesday’s game when the Montreal Canadiens are in town.
