A snowy, messy evening commute, Monday, was forecast to give way to freezing rain, on Tuesday.
Up to 10 centimetres of snow in total was expected in the capital, Monday, which helped turn streets and highways into slippery snow-covered routes on which vehicles crawled to their destinations.
Ottawa Police responded to 76 collisions on city streets from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Police normally respond to about 60 per day.
The City of Ottawa issued an overnight parking ban, barring anyone without an on-street vehicle permit from leaving their vehicle on city streets between 1 and 7 a.m., Tuesday.
Ottawa’s airport had several flights that were delayed, Monday evening, from 20 to 45 minutes. One flight to Philadelphia was cancelled.
After the snow, a warm front moving northeastward across southern Ontario is forecast to bring freezing rain to the region Tuesday morning. That prompted Environment Canada to issue a Freezing Rain Warning for Ottawa and the surrounding area.
“The temperature’s going to rise to about three degrees,” said 1310News meteorologist Richard Zurawski. “That gives us the risk of freezing rain; the really wet, slippery stuff. The stuff you don’t want.”
The freezing rain is expected to end by Tuesday evening, as temperatures rise above freezing. Wednesday could be almost balmy by comparison; Zurawski forecasts a high of 12 degrees.
