Ottawa under freezing rain warning

OTTAWA, Ont. – With many in Ottawa still busy digging themselves out of the snow, now it appears we’ll have to deal with some freezing rain.

Environment Canada has issued a Freezing Rain Warning for all of eastern Ontario, including Ottawa.

“The ground is well below the freezing mark, so it’s going to be like a skating rink,” said 1310News meteorologist Richard Zurawski. “Not only will you have freezing rain, you’ll have regular liquid rain forming an ice surface on things.”

The freezing rain could last for up to five or six hours, Zurawski said.

“It’ll be on and off, and then this evening and tonight it’ll taper off to just a few flurries,” said Zurawski. “Then we’re looking at some rain as the temperature rises overnight.”

The precipitation fell as snow, Monday morning. That, combined with the forecasted freezing rain led to school buses being cancelled, Monday, for the Upper Canada District School Board, the Catholic School Board of Eastern Ontario and the corresponding French language boards. Schools remained open.

A low pressure system from Colorado will bring warm air, which should help melt some of Friday’s massive snowfall.
